Chapter 10

Billie was in a great mood, a festive, happy mood. It was her birthday at last and Jason was coming to her little party. It would just be Nick and Dakota and Toni and Zane, but that was more than enough festivity. Even Sadie was coming with them, both to get her used to being around more people and because Billie couldn’t bear to leave her home alone. Besides, Cha-Cha had taken an improbable liking to the dog. Cha-Cha was a very eccentric cat and almost never behaved the way anyone expected her to.

It was just going to be a casual gathering, but Dakota was making Billie’s favorite meal and it was going to be a lot of fun. When Jason came to pick her up she saw that he was dressed in nice jeans and a gorgeous cashmere sweater that matched his eyes. They looked like the perfect couple, as she was wearing jeans and a sweater, too, but hers was a silvery-gray, chunky-knit angora and she was wearing big square silver earrings and an armful of silver bangles. “You look great,” they said in unison, which made them both laugh. Sadie was still a little shy with him, but all he had to do was call to her and she came, after looking at Billie to see if it was okay.

She adjusted to her new seat in the back of Jason’s Hummer very well. Billie was touched to see that Jason had put a nice soft fleece blanket on the seat for her. “Jason, that was so sweet. I’ll take it in and wash it for you when you bring us home.”

“Why do you need to wash it? That’s hers. I’m going to leave it in here so she can ride with me anytime,” he told her.

When they got to Nick and Dakota’s house, Nick was at the back door and he came out to the car to get Sadie. “I don’t want that wild cat of Dakota’s running out the door when you come in,” he explained. “You two go on in the front.”

Sadie went with him and Jason parked the Hummer at the end of the driveway. They walked up the curved driveway to the front door, which was open. Billie was about to say something to Jason when a loud chorus of “SURPRISE!” stopped her dead.

She covered her mouth, and tears rushed to her eyes and overflowed as she realized that her father and mother were there. Nick’s brother, Paul, was present with his wife, Patsy, along with Ayanna and everyone else from Hunter Construction. The only person missing was her brother, Johnny, who was traveling in Africa on business. She hugged her father tightly and did the same to her mother. In fact, she hugged everyone she saw. “You guys really got me this time,” she said tearfully. “This was a total surprise. Dakota, you could have given me a clue, a hint or something that Mama and Daddy were coming to town,” she said reproachfully.
